Fractions consist of two numbers. The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator.
numerator
denominator
An improper fraction is a fraction that has a numerator larger than or equal to its denominator. A proper fraction is a fraction with the numerator smaller than the denominator.
A mixed number consists of an integer followed by a proper fraction.
The mixed number -8 1/3 can be converted to an improper fraction by multiplying the -8 (the whole number) and the -3 (the denominator = negative because the entire fraction is negative). To this product, add the 1 (the numerator) giving
25, to form the new numerator, and use the - 3 as the new denominator.
So, -8 1/3 as an improper fraction is -25/3
Hope this helps ;-)
