I heard a story that there is a pub team in rural Australia that each year writes a letter to the Stanley Cup champions challenging them to a "World title match". Obviously the stanley cup champs never accept and the team then declares themselves World Champions and have a big party!!
Is this true?!? I cant find any information about this anywhere!!!

this would be true as when lord Stanly first put up the cup the ruls was that any team that thought that it was a ligitamate challange could challange for the cup, but in the early 1900's a team from northern canada thought it would challange for the cup, and after almost a months travel the team weary went on to the iceand were beaten so baddly that the governing body of the cup changed the ruling so that no team outside of a structured league could not challange for this cup. Teams probably think that they are good enough and do still send in challenges, but I think the going price 200 mil for a franchise is a deterant

I'm not sure if this is true but if it is then this pub team must realize that you don't just get a shot at the championship team without playing a full season to prove you are worthy. I also realize you should not declare yourself world champions unless the tournament was international. Maybe that will change. ( Technically the season is international because of the canada teams but this is hardly representative of a world tournament)
