In philosophy, essence is the attribute (or set of attributes) that make an object or substance what it fundamentally is ....

To me, "essence" means the primary substance of someone, something. It could be vitality, it could be a scent, and certainly an attribute within something larger.... if you want to go spiritual, that's a whole 'nother chapter ... but YES. : )

But this term is generally and mostly used while meaning a substance. say-
