Who was the one that saw the clone drown? And who was the one that killed the other magician's wife in the beginning, was it the real one or the brother? Who's hand got shot for real, the real one or the brother? And whos side was the old man on, and why did he say about the drowning thing with "agony?" And also, what were the birds representing? I loved the movie, but I'm sorta confused.

SPOILER ***

The machine made a duplicate of the magician Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman). The duplicates were real - like a transporter in Star Trek, except you end up with 2 real versions of yourself. So in the trick, Angier would kill one of his selves every night.

Alfred Border was the second magician (Christian Bale). He actually had a twin brother, and they switched back and forth in real life between playing the magician and playing the assistant (the assistant was in disguise).

One of the Border's killed Angier's wife at the beginning, but it appeared to be by accident. It's unclear exactly which of the two twin brothers it was. One of the brothers got shot - the other got his fingers chiseled off by choice.

The old man was probably on both magicians' sides . . . and on neither, because they were too competitive and obsessed.

Originally, the bird represented "getting your hands dirty" as in one of the early tricks, a bird was killed in the folding cage. This death foreshadowed the fact that Angier's would actually kill himself each night for a trick - his copy would live each night.

Just a thought.
