Well, if it's cold out side then there isn't a problem, it's just a little steam.

Otherwise, White smoke is REALLY bad... Black smoke is less bad but still not a good thing.

If the smoke is gray, it could be a number of things. If it looks more like steam, it could be a different number of things.

If it's black, you have a fuel problem. Meaning too much fuel. Depending on the vehicle it could be any number of things from a bad sensor to a worn or unadjusted carbuetor.

The gray smoke is usually worn piston rings, worn valve guides, worn valve stem seals, plugged PCV or possibly a leaking head gasket (not usually).

White smoke (aka steam) could be a cracked cylider head or block, a bad head gasket, warped head, or even a leaking intake manifold.

All of these depend on the type of vehicle you are asking about. If the engine has a lot of miles on it, it could just be worn out. In some cases if you overfill the engine oil, the car will smoke too.

Very simple: on a cold day, steam may what you are seeing, however if this is an ongoing problem....then it's a head gasket....bad news. Now if it's black smoke that seem dry and dusty like, then you are running rich...meaning the engine is burning excess gas. Now if the smoke is bluish in color, then the engine is burning oil....this can come from a number of of thing....bad rings, valve stems, bad cyl..by the way if steam is what you are seeing, check the water level and if you have to keep adding to it, then it's a gasket or the head .... car will get hot.

If it is actual smoke, and not simply moisture due to the cold weather, it is a pison ring problem. The smoke is coming from oil that is burning inside your motor and being expelled out of your tailpipe. This problem can be fixed by having new piston rings installed in your motor. This cost a little chunk of money, maybe around $300 depending on your car.

You might of blew a head gasket. Check your anti-freeze and oil. If you have oil in the anti-freeze and anti-freeze in with the oil, you proably blew a gasket.
