Freedom's biggest challenge is to REMAIN FREE. The problem with freedom is that there is always someone wanting to take it away. In the cold war days it was communism. Sometimes it is our own government but sometimes it is for our own protection.

The personal story that you can use, to begin your essay, might be a discussion of what freedom means to YOU. Do you know what freedoms you have? Are those freedoms important to you? Why?

Maybe you can talk about the "little" freedoms you have, in your own life, the ones your parents grant you. The freedom to go to the mall with your friends, for example, or whatever freedom you have, to do as you please. How would you feel, if those freedoms were removed? What will you do, to make sure that you retain those freedoms? Indeed, do you have to do anything, to earn them?

Then, you might talk about the freedoms inherent in living in the United States (or wherever you're from). Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from unlawful search and siezure, and on and on. Are THEY important to you? What do you have to do, to make sure that you retain them? Do you have to earn them? Do you have to keep watch over the Government, to make sure that your freedoms aren't taken away? What, exactly, is your responsibility, in order to ensure that you retain your freedom?

Patrick Henry once said, "Give me liberty (freedom) or give me death!" Do you feel the same way?

Freedoms greatest challenge is responsibility for your thoughts and deeds

In a free society there must be a payback to your family, friends, community and nation, but especially to yourself.

You are free to make decisions about your life and goals and how to obtain the greatest good for yourself and the others around you

Petty criminals cannot make decisions for themselves. In prison they have no decisions to make, no job to prepare for and keep. They get free room and board. One inmate stated they got three hots and a cot. Is that how you want to live?

freedom's challenge is eternal vigilance on the part of the average citizen. It means the if we want freedom, we have to pay attention to what our government is doing and speak up should a government try to curtail it or take it away completely.
