I'm a student thinking about applying for a part-time job at a big international airport. Not as a flight attendent, but as someone on the ground. I'm wondering if being at an airport for a long time somehow hinders your health because of all of the aircraft.

My father retired from the National Weather Service, then went to work for Northwest Airlines so he could travel for free in his retirement.. so let me tell you what information I garnered from his experience.
If you are working for an airline, handling luggage would be your main concern because we all know how some people pack and there are a lot of heavy bags to heft up into the luggage holds on the planes. So yes, you might have back problems if you did it long term, but other than that you have ear protection to wear and there are many safety issues you would be informed of before walking out by the airplanes. One of the big ones is always be aware of your surroundings because "prop" or "turbo-prop" planes have those propellers that you don't see when they are turning at full throttle. Of course some people have walked into them and it is a horrible thing.
Anyway, second hand smoke is probably worse than any exhaust fumes you breath on a tarmac. Don't worry about it too much, just enjoy the free travel! =)

It won't do anything to your health just being at the airport. There may be specific jobs that can affect your health. A lot of heavy lifting can take its toll on your body and I don't know how well shielded the xray machines are to be using them all day every day. There are some dangers with mechanical jobs just like there are in dealing with any large moving objects. The fumes can't be all that great for you and neither is the stress.

Philosophically, "From birth, we die."
Anyways, if you're refering to the smog that is emitted from the planes, then I don't think you should worry. There wouldn't be as large as a health risk compared to commuting with cars through the city because there are less enclosed spaces in airports and the air can properly cirrculate.
If you're working inside the airport, then there would be less to worry about because the building is usually ventillated well enough so that they could reduce spending money on heating, everyone wants to save money.

It would be highly unlikely if you're equipped with the proper personal protective equipment like industrial earmuffs. As for the other hazards around, they're mostly minor and can be found in any other working environment.
