....economically and generally behind most of its Southeast Asian neighbors today? What do you think should be done to improve this situation?

After Marcos the Philippines had a chance to emulate the economic tigers of Asia by instituting a viable land reform program to strengthen the agricultural sector. This was a priority for Taiwan and Korea. In the Phils. the government was (and still is) run by landowners and the wealthy, whose priority is protecting their class. Until there are jobs and services for the rural majority the country will never join their neighbors in prosperity.

Corruption is a symptom, not a cause of underdevelopment. The American political system is ill-suited for a developing country. Too much power is in the hands of a few in the national capital. If politicians were more accountable to the people and if the people felt more control over their lives things might change. Both can be accomplished by a federal system where the provinces will have to fend for themselves and local politicians will have to answer to their constituents instead of blaming Manila and begging/bribing/offering political IOU's at the same time.

The political culture has to change. The upper and middle class will have to discover and acknowledge what they have in common with the poor majority. The elite educated can also stop parroting the right-wing line of the U.S. by smearing proponents of popular movements in behalf of the poor as "communists," "destabilizers," or worse, "terrorists." The measure of progress is not how many shopping malls or hotels are up in Manila. Progress is how the poorest and most powerless can avail of the basics like healthcare, education, housing, etc. Unfortunately, most of the country's elite only measure progress by how their own immediate needs are met. These, unfortunately, are the ones who have the reins on power.

Corruptions. There is no equal opportunites for people there.

Pluse there are some deep divide inside philipines. There are areas that is no safe to travel. Every so often, there will be some military coup attempts. Almost all presidents were accused of corruptions.

Plus overall, the general philipinos are not as agressive and motivated compare to their counterparts in the southeast asia.

To make changes to that, the government must be free of corruptions. They must have leaders that are enforcing the rules and build up confidents in the public.

Philipines has a lot of good resouces. They must educate the people to protect their environment. Make more resorts and promote it to be another Hawaii. Granted that the politcal situations must be stable.

hey "well"! what a very nice question. =)

I think that big things came from small ones. I noticed that everyone answered that the main problem is the government. Yes indeed that's correct. And who's on the government? The people themselves. I believe that if every Filipino has a sense of discipline within themseves, our country will then be able to GROW AS A NATION. Simple acts like obeying traffic rules and throwing garbages to its proper place of an individual will yield a small, almost negligible effect to the whole society, but if everyone of us has this thinking, then definitely, such small acts will result to bigger effect of making our country alive again.

I hope every Filipinos will realize that we should live NOT only for ourselves, but also for our countrymen. Many people has this tendency of forgetting a sense of nationalism because they are indirectly affected by it. When I say indirectly, it means that they unconsciously realize that they are also affected with the poverty happening in their country since they are being blinded by the wealth they currently have. But do they realize the long-term effect of this negligence??? Do they realize what will happen to the future of their sons and daughters??? Do they realize that it might lead to a national failure which currently happening right now??

It's just a matter of reflecting on ones concern to the nation. This simple question being asked by "Well" is just a sign that there are still Filipinos out there that do not let go of the need for CHANGE that is yet to be learned by us. I myself is starting to realize that. (hopefully =) ). With our small acts of love for the country, I know someday, Philippines will be able to get again the glory it had before.

GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES!!!

Filipinos value education a lot. Most of us are college graduates. However, not much work is available in the country. So most of our graduates go abroad. Most of our doctors turned nurses had gone to the US. Our pharmacist are also in demand in the US, Australia and Canada. Our teachers are now migrating also as domestic helpers in Hongkong and others as teachers in the USA. Pilots are also retiring and majority are also going out of the country. One day, our country will be suffering from brain drain.
Why is this happening? Our political situation is the reason behind this! Our country was ahead before but it is already behind since most of our politicians are corrupt and self-interest is being developed and not the country. Most of the graduates think they dont have any future in the country.

I would have to say that's because of the people and the government officials. It's just that so many government officials are corrupt and that really pulls down our economy. I also think that we're not using our natural resources in the right way.

It is very sad that the Philippines is in this situation. I just hope that one day I can do something that would make things better.

These days it's becoming apparent that economic success has more to do with geography than government, culture, or any of that. Islands are at a big disadvantage regarding transportation. Trade is impractical in some cases, or expensive in others.

The Philippines is lagging in economy because of the incessant political bickerings and widespread corruption. Filipinos must change and become the pride of Asia if not of the world.

Get rid of the corruption that is prominent in all walks of life, from their political leaders to the most miniscule street peddlers, would be a start. It is one of the most corrupt nations in the world today, making victims of those least deserving-- the beautiful, hard working Filipino people.

Too much corruption in the gov't. When I was there I read all sorts of stories about local officials skimming off money on public works projects. ex).using less asphalt to pave roads and selling the "excess". You couldn't even send packages through the post office. My father's friend who was a policeman advised my dad to split up a pair of shoes and send them separately, otherwise if he sent the complete pair, they were garaunteed to be stolen.
