Poverty only causes crime for people who make excuses for themselves and refuse to be personally responsible for their actions.

Killing, raping, and stealing is wrong. You don't need to be rich to understand that.

EDITED TO SAY:
As you can see from the responses on this board personal responsibility no longer exists.
"It's not my fault, I am a victim", is now the new motto in the US.

Sometimes yes ... sometimes no.

Studies have shown correlations between petty crime and high poverty. Studies also reveal a correlation between white-collar crime and wealth (Enron). Additionally, there are parts of the Third world where the extreme impoverished are the ones who live the most moral lifestyles; while their leaders are corrupt (N. Korea). However there are many other factors added into the study and it is impossible to isolate the occurrences to make a definite conclusion or create policy from this simple statement.

I assume that you are talking about regular ordinary garden-variety crime, and not exotic crimes. Poverty doesn't directly cause crime. I've been poor most of my adult life and I've ALWAYS been able to find ways to make money legally. What DOES cause crime is the combination of hopelessness, perceived helplessness, poor impulse control, and opportunity. Combine this state of existence with strong, unmet needs, and crime will grow like weeds in a vacant lot. The old folks used to say, "the Devil makes work for idle hands".

Yes, because desperate people commit crimes to survive, and some people do not see another way out. I am not saying that it is an excuse, I am just saying in my opinion poverty does cause more crime for many reasons.

Poverty does NOT cause crime. A person's individual freedom of choice is what causes crime. There are many men and women who have grown up in poverty, who have chosen to lift themselves and their children (present and/or future) out of poverty and into better and higher social standing and better opportunities. And they did it legally, morally and ethically. Crime happens when people become selfish, and don't give a damn about others. Yes, we all ARE responsible for the consequences of our actions. We cannot blame our circumstances.
