Miss Kitty was just about to close the Longbranch for the evening. It had been a slow night and anyway, she was exhausted. As the last drunk staggered out the swinging doors she could hear him mumble under his breath,"I'LL NEVER GET OUT OF THIS WORLD ALIVE." As she climbed the stairs to her velvet curtained room, she sighed. Yep. She let out a l o n g sad.......sigh. She had been expecting to see her boyfriend,Matt Dillon, Marshal of the town. She spent the entire day thinking of him, daydreaming of him. But once again, he was too busy with his job to even make one appearance.
Well, she had had it!! As she knelt to pray that evening,(which was getting tougher and tougher for her to do...I mean,well...old Red was getting older now,you know) she asked God to please free her of her blind devotion to a man who would never be hers. "And God, if you could just TAKE THESE CHAINS FROM MY HEART, I sure would appreciate it. Amen." She struggled to get off the floor, and was just about to get in bed when she heard a sound at her window. "Oh hell, now what?!" As she gazed down from her window, there was the man of her dreams..."Kitty,hi,it's me," Matt said. "Why did you close up,so early?" "MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, Matt." Matt stood there with a perplexed look on his rugged face and a very COLD,COLD, HEART. ( A rain had begun to fall and there he was....standing in an alley, getting yelled at,and becoming sadder by the moment... Hmmmm.......looked like he had blown it again.)
"Kitty,please....let me come in and I'll explain." "No, Matt. I've had it. YOUR CHEATIN' HEART has hurt me for the last time." "My cheatin' heart? Kitty, I was't cheating on you!" "Yes you were ,Matt. You really were. That job of yours is like 'the other woman.' And the thing is ....she always wins." "Kitty. That's absurd and you know it. Now let me in!!!" "Matt, I'm going to close the window, turn out the light and go to bed...alone."
Matt just stared up at her and then slowly turned away. As he started walking toward his office,to his crummy old cot in a corner, he could be heard singing that old, sweet classic ...."I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY."
