I have a circumsicion scar and I had it done years ago but I still get an itch or sting on it from time to time. I've heard scars itch but Im worried it could mean its something worse. So, can anyone please tell me if its really a normal thing for a scar to itch after years of it being there.

I'm not an MD, so that would be my first advice -- ask a doctor.

Second, you don't say how many years it has been -- 2, 5, 10, 20? It probably depends.

I had breast reduction surgery about five years ago and my scars still itch and hurt from time to time. A year after surgery I went back to my surgeon and had them pull a tiny tiny piece of stitch out that had failed to dissolve the way it should have and caused me to occasionally feel a pricking sensation, as if someone took a needle and jabbed my t*t. A nurse told me that some people don't dissolve the stitches as well as others and that residual bits of stitches can cause a little discomfort. Aside from really occasional itching and pain, though, my scars are pretty comfortable at this point.

Considering the sensitive location of your scar, I would guess that some itching and stinging is normal and will go away over time. But, also considering the sensitive location of your scar, you might "enjoy" talking to your doctor about possible ways of reducing your discomfort.

Good luck!

I'm a woman so I of course have not had a circumcision but I have had a few surgeries and I have scars. I have to say that the scar on my naval and my heel do not itch. I get a gross disgusting feeling when they are touched. However, my sister who was in a car accident 6 years ago has a significant scar on her forehead. And it makes me jittery when she rubs, tugs and scratches at it. She says that it itches most of the time. I think everyone is different and yes, they can itch. I think you're a lucky one. What a wonderful place to have an itch. I'm sure it's quite satisfying at times. :) Sorry, I'm tired. Have a wonderful day!

Yes! I have one on my back shoulder blade that drives me crazy!!!! It will kind of go numb around it and it itches terribly bad sometimes. But the itch feels like it's deep inside and the harder I scratch the more it "hurts". It's a weird hurt and a weird feeling all together. But I do believe it's normal, I have had this scar for almost 10 yrs now!

Scars itch, yes. Sometimes simply because the skin is still healing & what you're feeling is the skin tightening around the scar. Other times...it just itches.

Your scars are more sensitive than other skin on your body.
