Most of the "Freed" slaves knew nothing of life any other way than being told what, where, and when by their "Master". Not to imply they were ignorant. The most were ignorant by design. Not being allowed to learn to read and write or to make any choses for themselves makes you totally dependent and unable to care for yourself. Not all were in this position but a vast majority were. As far as reconstrution goes, It's still in progress and has a long, long way to go before we can ever think of everyone as real equals. To see someone as a person, never noticing thier color, accent, size, dress, style, age or any other ignorant predjudice, is truely reconstructive. Lets hope it comes to pass some day!

Very interesting subject. The true history of Reconstruction is a real problem as it has been misrepresented so much right grom the start.
You'd have to discuss the early efforts of people like Booker T Washington and uh that other guy. Also in popular culture the song John Henry tells you a lot.

Not to sound rood or anything but it's like asking to discuss accomplishment after rape. Lets see... I would imagine the first thing was to get back their dignity and then to have fought against the south in blue suites...
