What makes the strange sound in the opening credits of Lost?

In the opening credits of Lost when they show the word 'LOST' there is a deep, echoey groan. How did the creators make the noise?

The noise was actually created by LOST co-creator JJ Abrahms home computer! Apparently, it's a mix of the sound effects used for the engines and the sound used for when the plane began to rip apart - how cool is that!

A synthesizer, no doubt. Computers today can mimic or create just about any sound out there.
