The failures come when the value of the function is 0, because that's when the function would normally change from positive to negative. Since you've got the absolute value though, this makes a corner, which isn't derivable.

So, find where 9-XX=0, and you've got your answers.

Look at points where 9-x^2 changes sign. For -3 < x < +3 it's nice and smooth then at those boundary points it's reflected. Without the absolute value it would look like an upside down parabola. With the abs value the parabola 'bounces' off the x axis to stay positive. Plot some points and flare in a curve.
