I said I didn't like the way this person talked to me and felt disrespected in his attitude toward me and with that being said I had to apologize for something I said to him because I was being a hypocrit. It was not taken well because I was "qualifying the apology" What exactly does that mean?

There was no drinking or drugs involved when this occured. I was making two different statements back to back. One was the disrespect to me from him and the other was an apology for something I said to him in the same conversation.

Sounds to me like there may have been some type of substance involved or lack of proper wording. The only thing I could search my brain and com up with is that perhaps this other person either wasn't satisfied with the apology you gave, or was trying desperately to turn the spotlight off an uneasy situation that he created. Some people just act completely irrational in situations when they know it is at their hand that chaos is stirred, but most times when emotions are fueled (and it sounds like they were in this situatuion) we all say things that we don't mean....and in some cases, don't make sense. My suggestion would be to contact this friend and ask him if he could explain to you what he meant, but if he can't or seems to go 'round in circles with a definition, agree to disagree and move on. Friendships aren't worth losing all because of a play on words.

No one likes to hear, "I'm sorry, but..."

If you are sorry, say so. If the other person is unwilling to say he/she is sorry without any prompting from you, it's meaningless. Say yours and leave it alone. Good luck.

You are saying I am sorry, but the reason I did it was a good one....
