Can the middle class be saved or will there just be rich and poor? Should the middle class even be saved or should capitalism just run its course?

It ain't gonna happen as long as one party controls all three branches of government. (Same answer even if it was the Dems.) Any society without a strong middle class is doomed to failure, so we better find a way to save it. Getting political balance back in government is a good first step.

There are a few ways to address income inequalities that all have some downsides.

Taxes work to redistribute income. If you tax the higher incomes and divert that money into social programs, you are effectively taking money away form those who have the most and giving it to those who have the least. If (This is a very strong If) these social programs are effective you can decrease the amount of poor and add new numbers to the middle class. While taxes are a duty and the price one pays to live in rich society, taxing the rich and corporation too much, will discourage them from investing in the economy creating new jobs and opportunities. If these people not taxed enough you could argue that they a benefiting unfairly from a stable system, that provided them, with necessary laws and order that allowed them to rise to their full potential.

My suggestion would be a low corporate tax and a high inheritance tax. This would allow the groups of people to bring the maximum investment to the society while paying for the services they benefited from.

Another way to help address income inequalities is through education. Reduce the price of post secondary education, increase the quality of secondary and primary school education. Education like nothing else is the great equalizer. Few things in economics show as strong as a relationship as education and income.
The question that is left after improving the education system is, "who will pay for the free education"?

The upper income earners need to be taxed more heavily on their income taxes. What ever happened to giving back?

I think that capitalism is a good thing. However, minimum wage needs a boost, and we need affordable housing for all.

I think the idea of a flat tax is a good idea. I do not think it would have much effect on the charitable contributions of the wealthy. How can someone who earns millions, ever spend it all -- and you can't take it with you.

I think the middle class can be saved. And I think we have a long way to go, to get the low-wage earners up to middle class. When there is less difference between us, crime and acts of hatred will drop.

The divide seems to grow larger every day, doesn't it? But maybe the middle class will survive but I think soon the middle class will become the highest class level one can attain. Already the wealthy class has become a goal few of us could ever reach from our lowly middle class standing. But, still it's America, everyone has the right to aspire.

Please stop listening to Lou Dobbs. He has turned into a raging Populist.

If you want to destroy the middle class, have politicians and government try to "save" them. Nothing will destroy them faster.

I live in the poorest state in the country (Louisiana). For the past 70 years, since Huey Long, politicians have been "saving " the middle class. All they did was produce big government and more poor people.

Middle class is the heart of capitalism. They are the ones who own the businesses and keep America going.

There will always be extremely rich people.
There will always be lazy, incompetent,, welfare poor people.

Then there will be the worker bees. The ones that work like dogs everyday to provide for their families.

Change the way the government charges income taxes. Why a person who's making $700K has to pay the same amount of taxes as a person who is making $120K, which is a freaking 45%, almost half of the income...it's too UNFAIR!!
