when i stand outside for a long period of time i notice the sky turn purple, why?

sunlight gets refracted when passing through the earth's atmosphere. Depending on the angle that the light is striking the atmosphere will determine which colors of the spectrum will be scattered and which ones will pass through that we can see.

This is why as the sun sets or rises, we can see the sky change colors.

Another thing is that 100 years ago we didn't have the spectacular sun sets that we get today. All the fluorocarbons and other things we humans have pumped into the atmosphere with our hairspray and air conditioners have caused some interesting things chemically to our atmosphere allowing the pinks and oranges that we can see in the evenings. They didn't exist 100 years ago.

well, the sun's light is sometimes reddish and the sky is normally blue... and so, red+blue=purple...
