When you install most programs, you will be given an option for the path (usually C:\Program Files) to install. Choose to modify that, and choose the letter of the drive you wish to use (e.g. E) so it would read E:\Program Files. Then the install program will create that directory on your external drive and the program will be installed there.

you may desire to get magic partioning CD out of your chum to boot. despite the fact that if i'm no longer recommending making an further partition the place you have already got archives, considering you may lose( corrupt, for this reason ) it and you no longer likely to be happy. the excellent way in case you ought to purchase yet another hard disk drive and merely deploy ubuntu on it. in case you gonna do your installation of ubuntu, quote : "ASAP", you will screw up your domicile windows installation and unfastened all the information. Or get a usb flash rigidity and deploy Ubuntu on it, and boot out of it. you are able to save all the changes which you will do from flash top to flash rigidity and use it thoroughly. while not having issues of domicile windows and all this partitioning.
