I would have to say Big Bear Lake Ca. in the San Bernardino Mountains. In the winter there is "man made" snow. There are two snowboarding/ski resorts. I suggest Bear Mountain if your not bringing the kids. There is a small village where you can have dinner, buy some leather, see a movie and then get a tattoo.lol point is theres a lot of little shops and stuff. The cabins are pretty reasonable. I wouldnt suggest going to the local bar on the weekend, inless you bring your brass knuckles. You never know what will happen up in them hills!

Try Yosemite, the Tahoe area, anywhere along Hwy 49: outskirts of Grass Valley-Nevada City, Placerville, Jackson, etc., the Motherlode.
Tahoe has more than just its lake (and nearby Donner). Truckee is in the area, too.

Living in this area for over 17 years, there is so much to do--- skiiing, snowboarding, hiking and biking, camping, ghost town exploring, you name it.

Enjoy!

Anywhere near Felton or Ben Lommond, just south of San Francisco in the redwoods. Niiiiiice.

Also, there is a beach close by if you change your mind.

Julian, California. And, I know I won't spell this right- Idyllwilde!

Both rock, are secluded, no beaches, but are both in Southern California...
