My girlfriend just got a prescription for Metformin while at the same time we are on the Atkins diet. What are the dangers of taking Metformin while on the Atkins diet?

She must be a type II, adult onset diabetic, right? She'll be closely watching her blood sugars...and that's the key. Also, check with her Doctor! Better safe than sorry!

Metformin is a diabetes drug, so your girlfriend needs to watch her diet as a diabetic. This means avoiding sugars, not matter what form they are in. I recommend you switch to a diet more specialised for diabetes. I'm not that familiar with the Atkins diet, maybe there's a version especially made for people with diabetes. Please find out and have her talk to her doctor. Diabetes is serious, it can be life-threatening and cause serious debilitation problems if blood sugars are not well controlled (eg: blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, amputation of limbs, polyneuropathy, coma, death....) Follow the advice of a professional!! The worst thing she can do is stop the pills!! She should take the pills as instructed by her doctor until her doctor tells her otherwise. The diet won't cause any interaction with the drug. The concern is that the diet isn't especially made for people with diabetes.
