i remember this from last year, um.. lubrication helps, also, if you tilt the hard surface at an angle it becomes a wedge or something, and less friction equals less work but more distance, something like that

Change the surface. Like if you have a polished dining room table and can slide say a salt shaker across it. If you add a table cloth, increased resistance would cause less slide.
