There are so many answers to that question, but one of the main reasons is that people have higher and higher standards. They believe that the more money the have, the higher above everyone else they become, and thus the happier they are. People measure happiness by the amount of money and material things you have. Who can blame them? Our society measures success by the material quantities we possess, instead of the immeasurable internal quantities we often lack.
It's a vicious cycle: people believe that money makes them happy, and then often the happiness brought upon by material things is an "empty" happiness, meaning that it dissipates rather quickly. So there is continuously a feeling of emptiness we all feel, and we try to fill that up with material things, not knowing that it is those specific things that make us feel empty in the first place. Not knowing also that the only thing that can fill that emptyness is the immaterial: love, friendship, that feeling you get when you help others in need. Things like that.
I'm glad you realized that there are more valuable things in life than money =)

Because they are materialistic and egotistic. Money represents to them, power, prestige and the acquisition of material things. Money is a cursory value. In other words, we come into the world without a cent and go out the same way. But while we're here, money, unless it's used for survival, or to help others, is the root of all evil.

You have a jacked up view of conservatives. Many of what you are saying is just a repeat of the drive by media. I am a conservative, and money is not what it is all about. I am also a soldier. We are preparing the Iraqi people to be self sufficient. We believe that people who are self sufficient do better work. They aren't using welfare as a crutch and remaining in poverty. If they are self sufficient, they can move up in their life rather than remain misserable. My family would be considered "rich" according to a liberal, and we DID NOT get a tax cut. Tax cuts for the rich is a lie straight out of the liberal play book. The death penalty is a punishment. If they disobey the law, they must be punished. And if the crime is severe enough for death, then that's what it takes. Terrorism is another story. Would you rather the terrorists blow YOU up. I am sworn to protect people like you, with my life. So don't bad mouth my "agenda".

it is because money owns them, and they don't own the money.
they serve the money. and it's a lonely life.
maybe at some point of our lives we experience that, not until we realize that life is more important, to love and to be loved.
what if they die tonight?

Because they have nothing else in their lives to cling on to. They have lost control of their life, and need control. They can control money. Tada.
