As others have already said, John Denver wrote it, Peter Paul and Mary first performed it, and later John Denver performed it. After that, several other people covered it, but I think John Denver's version is the best, personally.

Before he was famous, John Denver wrote it and Peter,Paul and Mary recorded it. Later on, he recorded it ,as well. Here is a link of a very young John, singing with the trio.
