You mean a noteBOOK ?
Nowadays there's no big difference between one of those and a laptop - the terms are often used interchangeably. But the term 'laptop' is older than the term 'notebook', which was introduced to refer to new, smaller devices which were, in contrast to previous laptops, the approximate size of an A4 paper sheet - hence the term notebook.

So...
a real notebook computer should have the size of notebook, while a laptop would be bigger.

I have a Sony Viao Notepad and a Sony Viao Laptop. The Notepad is quite a lot smaller. There's no extra space around the small keyboard and the screen is the same size. The notepad is approximately half the size of the laptop.

A notepad is the low-tech version ... paper bound together on which you write with a pen or pencil.

A laptop is the hi-tech version, does a lot more, but not as handy, ;)
