does breastfeeding really help to lose weight after a baby is born? Personal experiences would be helpful.

I breastfed after two pregnancies. I hate to exercise and I LOVE to eat. By breastfeeding, I not only lost all of the weight gained from the pregnancies...but I got back to the size I was when I first started college!!! I attribute the weight loss completely to breastfeeding.

In my first pregnancy, I gained ~50 pounds. It took a year to lose it without dieting or exercise. In my second pregnancy, I gained ~35 pounds. It took about 9-10 months to lose the weight. If I had eaten healthier and exercised, I probably would have lost the weight in half the time.

Oh yes! all those baby fat cells stored in the hips and yes butt too, get converted into the energy of makin milk. I went from 155 after birth to 2 months later 135. It helps with everything, it helps keep baby blues away as well, at least i think it did with me. Breast feeding for as long as possible(or comfortable) is the best thing, not only for baby, but mommy too! You'll be back in that bikini sononer than you think, but excersise and healthy eating are big factors, so being smart about the whole thing will also help.

I breastfed and certainly lost weight faster while I was doing so. Also, I did read that there are some fat cells in a woman's stomach that are designed to be burnt while nursing, and that they will otherwise remain there... unless you liposuction.
But I didn't breastfeed for any of these reasons; I breastfed because of the benefits for the baby. My kids didn't even have the sniffles while young enough to nurse, and there is even a study that says breastfed babies are less likely to have cancer during their lives.

Absolutly! I had lost all of my 33lbs of pregnancy weight by the time my boy was 4 weeks old. I just nursed him on his command and cut out alot of the processed foods in my diet. I didn't breastfeed my first son and it took a year to lose all that pregnancy weight.

yes, with both pregnancies, i lost all pregnancy weight by the 6 week check up.

and that's in addition to the baby getting human milk, which raises her iq, prevents diabetes and some cancers, and actually helps prevent cancers and osteoporosis for mom - long term nursing helps for that last one.

WHO recommends at least two years of nursing on demand. it's great for baby and mommy - tho if you've not seen people do it, contact la leche league for support and guidance. they are fabulous and utterly non-judgemental.
