I'm trying to guess what percentage of the population is so racist, sexist, etc. that they would never vote for a black person or woman, and whether they would vote, and if they did, who would their party be.

Or the flip side of that--would they gain support for being a woman or African American?

Response to Yoshi: I'll admit I slanted the question a little and didn't make the point clearly. I'm not saying we are backward because we have never had a minority president, I'm saying we are backward if we don't believe it could happen.

We have a lot of uninformed voters. Racism still isn't dead, but it's slowly on the way out. For a generation or so now, we have been seeing some racial backlash or "reverse racism".

None of this should matter in selecting the president or any other candidate for office. No doubt there are qualified women and blacks who could be nominated for the presidency, but no serious candidate has been nominated up to now. Some pretty good possibilities have stated that they don't even want the job.

First of all, you have worded to questions as one. Your first question is, "Is the US backwards for an industrialized country". And your second question is, "Could a woman or African American really be President?" This is not a cause and effect relationship as your question would suggest. If there is not an African American president, does that mean that the U.S. is a backwards country. And if an African-American is elected president, on that day would the US become a non-backwards country?

In theory, yes a woman or an African American can become President in the US. There is no law that prevents either group from running or being elected President of the United States. If you are asking how likely it is that a woman or African American will be elected president, that changes the question entirely. Yes, the US is built on the myth that any little boy or little girl can grow up to be president. Like a lot of myths, this is false. The leaders of this country tend to come from a very narrow group- white, male and wealthy.

I fear that your question is quite perplexing. In the recent most election there was even a BLACK woman running for vice president, but not one even gave her much thought. In 2000 a black woman ran on the reform party ticket and also got zero attention.

I don't think it has much to do with color, age race or anything else on a demographic scale. Rather is has a lot to do with power brokers in the political machines.

The Democrats and Republicans have run to the middle so much and placated so many people with money, that there's not a thin dime's difference in their overall performance.

Getting more people to vote in the first place will help diminish the power politicians have of buying groups' support with campaign promises.

i think of any woman yet Hillary, could be a stable theory. i think of Hillary is merely too devisive, to be stable for the country. additionally, the way the Muslims reguard women human beings might reason many issues in dealing with them. A black president could be large. So while you're searching for critiques, haven't any difficulty with the two a black or a woman growing to be to be President. I merely ask your self whether now's the the ideal option time for the two.

Why does a question like this get asked every single day?

You aren't winning any friends or influencing many people by condescending to us in talking about racism/sexism among American voters.
