first of all, HTML is NOT a programming language. It's a "markup" language... which means, its all about presentation... how data should be presented (bigger, colorful, layouts and stuffs) HTML is mostly used to design websites.

PHP is programming language (some might say "scripting" language). That means it does the programming - logic, arithmetics, and all other good stuffs.

So PHP would calculate and "get the data/information" and HTML will "present the data/informaton"

php/asp/jsp they all fall under same category... they are more of "web scripting" language then "complete programming lanuage" such as java, c/c++

hope it answers it.

html is used with css to create the look and sense of an internet site. javascript is used to create dynamic look and sense, jointly with 'pretend abode windows' like what facebook makes use of. Hypertext Preprocessor and asp are server area languages that are used to make the content textile dynamic (such by way of fact the chat on facebook, this positioned up, and your question).
