I live on a dead end street across from my town's oldest cemetary and have never had trick or treaters brave enough to venture my way. However, every year, I buy one bag of candy ( the good kind...Reese's, Hershey's, etc.) just in case the kiddies show up. If they're brave enough, hey they score good candy. But every year, I end up giving it to my own kids.

It is so hard to figure! I have had up to over 200 kiddos and down to none! It is according to where you live, if you decorate- which is an invitiation!,if you have kids,if you are known,if you have lots of family, if you live by a school,or have a really nice home where kids think you can afford good chocolates! I try to give 3 pieces to each kid unless they are taller than I am! Then I only give one. One year I ran out 3 times and went to the store for more and then ran out again and had to get my mom's candy since the store was closed(small town) and mom wasn't having any trick and treaters. After that I gave out pennies, then nickles, then dimes, then I turned off the lights! There was a traffic jam on the street for hours.I had really decorated that year and learned my lesson! I hope you have fun. I also put Jesus loves you on my candy with small strips of paper.

If your neighborhood is one that is very popular for trick or treating, then buy about 3 big multi packs of candy. Give 1-2 pcs per child.
Trick or treating usually lasts about 4-5 hours in most areas.
And, if it's not that busy of a neighborhood... then get only 1 big multi pack of candy.

My parents bought probably like $5 worth of candy (you know, those 2 for $5 big bags). We don't get too many trick or treaters, maybe like 10 at most.
I always buy the candy that's on sale AFTER Halloween =]
(For myself and friends of course, NOT next Halloween)

A week or so before Halloween, we buy just enough. When that is all gone - a couple of days prior to Halloween, we buy an obscenely large amount. That way we are sure to have leftovers. And tummy aches.

I generally get 1 5lb. bag of tootsie rolls, a 3lb bucket of laffy taffy and a 5 lb bucket of bubble gum. After all that I try to throw in a couple bags of chocolate candy bars of some sort.

At my old house, we had 100 kids every Halloween so I had to get several bags. We moved to the "woods" so hardly have any kids ring the bell.
