It depends upon whether or not the sore throat is caused by a plain cold, an infection, or perhaps overextension of the voice by yelling too loudly.

If there is an infection you might want to consider using an Echinacea tincture every couple of hours. I believe 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon is sufficient.

Marshmallow and licorice tea is good for general discomfort. Of course, you would need to drink this off and on all day long.

Combine sage, and thyme together in a tea - steep the herbs for 10 to 15 minutes and use lemon. This should help not only the sore throat, but also sage is good for a cold. It's great in salad too, particulary if chopped up fine, otherwise it can be a bit strong. The above combination of sage and thyme can be made into a throat spray as well.

If the sore throat seems to be preceding a cold, try boneset and elderflower tea - this combination helps with fever, aches, and pains.

I particularly find the sage to be the best overall. I love using this herb in my salads, soups, and whenever I roast chicken, lamb, or beef. It really helps to clear a cold and take away the soreness.

Another great one for fighting infection is oregano.

Please dont use any aromatherapy oils internally - it's very dangerous if you are not a trained herbalist. Whilst occasionally they are used in remedies they are used in such minute quantities to litres of liquid that they are rendered safe. We are talking pin head size here.

Most honeys are only sweet and have no therapeutic value. The honey and lemon drinks will soothe but not cure.

What will cure is a spoonful of Manuka Honey at least 10+ will blast even a really bad sore throat away in a day or so. Manuka honey is a medical honey made from pollen gathered from the Manuka or Tea Tree. It is an antiseptic honey (so expect a slight antiseptic taste) but excellent at healing both internally and externally. It is not cheap as it is only harvested in New Zealand, but it is worth every penny.

You can get it from Health Food shops like Holland and Barrett or on line.

The grades 5+, 10+, 15+ etc are to do with how strong the medical properties of the honey are.

Garlic is the most important remedy for sore throat. Chew some garlic pieces.

I have also compiled some of the other home remedies for sore throat

* Add lemon juice (from one lemon) some honey, to a glass of hot water. Drink this.
* Gargle with warm salt water.
* Figs, beets are also very effective in sore throat.
* Gargle with aloe Vera juice two times daily.
* Another remedy is to add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to 1 cup of boiling water; stir well and sip slowly.
* Prepare a mixture by adding ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar and ¼ cup of honey. Take one tablespoon every four hours or as needed for pain relief.

The oldest remedy is warm water and salt -- gargled 2-3 times a day... The next thing you could do place your face over steaming water w/a towel over your head. This will loosen your throat muscles.

If you can get Manuka honey (it's a type of honey from New Zealand, available in health food shops), it's proven to have a very strong antibacterial action - much stronger than normal honey. Either eat it straight, or make a lemon and honey drink (the lemon is also good for the throat).

Try to drink two liters of hot water with honey, lemon and eucalyptus. Drink it as hot as possible so you get a good sweat. Drink as much as you can so that the hot mix breaks the mucus that is accumulating in your throat and in all your digestive system. You will urinate a lot with all this water, but this is normal as you will be flushing out the toxins. This also works great when you get a cold. Get well, Andy!

Easiest and cheapest, with no fannying around?
(Provided you have no contraindications).

3 soluble aspirins dissolved in warm water, gargle several times and swallow.

3 times a day.

Up your fluid intake and keep swallowing. This will keep the throat moist and therefore less sore. You may need to buy a pack or 2 of hard boiled sweeties.

Don't spend a fortune on cough sweets etc. Mother nature will sort it out given time.
