I love all the responses. I think I should mention that I live in El Paso, TX. It still gets to about 78 degrees during the day. I do like to display them all in the yard so the neighbors can see them. Thank you, keep the answers coming.

the day before is usually the best. If you do carve a bit earlier rubbing the carved places in the pumpkin with Vaseline will help the pumpkin last up to three days longer.
So even with the help of Vaseline, no more then two or three days before hand.

It depends where you are going to store the pumpkin. If it is in a cool dry place it is okay to purchase one about a week ahead. You want to keep it from freezing outside and getting too warm and rotting. I always wait until about 3 days before Halloween and then carve it Halloween morning or afternoon. Best of luck & HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Pumpkins last a while as long as you don't have a candle burning in it every night. Buy a week before, carve and set on your porch. Don't put the candle in until Halloween night.

I paint mine with acrylic paints so they stay fresh a long time. They have such great personalities and I put textured yarns for hair or stems and make little hats, etc for them. You can go scary or cute and the pumpkin stays fresh until you are finished with it or want to make pumpkin pie! Have fun and it is also safer than carving!

you can buy the pumpkin at any time...they last forever if they are kept inside and away from moisture and don't light it (the heat from the candle will make it warp). if you carve it early, keep it out of the cold, if kept in the right environment a carved pumpkin can last up to a week. have fun and good luck! :)

You can buy one pretty much anytime..they last forever...until you carve them.

I believe they are all picked right around the same time...so..buy now..get the best selection..just wait to carve until a few days before...if you live in a warm climate..wait longer

I'd wait until about Thursday this week if you can't wait until the weekend!

I've heard that spraying lemon juice on it helps preserve the pumpkin as well.

the fresher the better, unless you are going to roast the seeds for eating later, then you may want it a few days sooner. some like to put a pumpkin out early, others later. take your pick.
