I might be dropping a class soon (which I haven’t done for years!!) because I'm planning on transferring soon and tiring to keep my GPA up. I'm doing very badly in this course even though I'm tiring, and I'm going to try and talk to the instructor again, but it looks like I may end up dropping. Regardless...

If I decided to go though and I didn't pass and get an F, why does a W look better?

Isn't it kind if implied to a job or university that your NOT going to be good at everything? And somehow giving up is considered better instead of actually trying?

It all depends on your school. If you HAVE to take the class, i would get the F, most schools allow you to fail and replace once per class. With an F you are able to attend all the way to the end of the semester, with a W most professors ask you leave, meaning you can't continue to try and learn it. If you dont need the class for your major/you aren't really interested in the class i say get the W. But if you need the class i would get the F and retake it if your school has a grade forgiveness policy.

The W is much better than getting and F in the class. With a W, it does not effect GPA, and it is unknown the reason for withdrawal. There could be a variety of reasons... but with an F it either makes you look like you were not serious, or it makes you look as if you had severe problems grasping the material. Especially if it is a pre-req for a major.. this would be very bad. Take the W and if you need to pick the class up at another time

An F is the worst grade you can get. If you get a F people may think you goofed off, but a W means at least you took the responsibility to bow out graciously. A W doesn't count toward your GPA but a F does. You can always get tutoring and take the class again if you don't want to give up.

A "W" is way better than an "F" because the F grade gets computed in your grade point average and weighs down your other courses. At a certain point in the semester, the instructor or professor assigns a "WP" or "WF," so it is better to talk to them when you withdraw from the class. This shows that you are taking responsibility to do things properly. Most profs will assign a "WP" when you talk with them. Best wishes.

Because the F is going to count towards your final GPA, but the W will not.

Of course, five years after you graduate, no one cares about your grades anymore.

With a W, they don't necessarily know you withdrew because you were failing, maybe a personal problem came up. Plus a W does not effect your GPA, an F does.
