Our family is relocating from Kansas City to Chicago. We're looking to live in a fun, hip part of town...but it needs to be out of the city, since we have two young kids. We are searching for an upscale neighborhood, with diversity and good schools. We work out of our home, so proximity to work is not important. Any suggestions? And what's the difference between the northern and southern suburbs. Anything we should consider?

well there is Orland, tinley park, worth , mattson, franfort, these are south west of chicago ill, if you go north arlington heights, palinetine, you could use map quest use zip code 60445 thats creastwood / midlothian ill . there are a lot more towns that have very good schools but keep in mind the better the schools the higher the taxes WILL be. almost forgot for the price you would pay to live northwest of chicago you won't get a lot of property like you will if you go south for the same price. where i live my lot size is 50X127 dbl lot up north you might get half. I own a tri level paid less then 100,000 sometime ago but my home up north cost 325,000 or more with less space. hopes this helps.

WELCOME TO ILL.

I grew up in the northern suburbs. The northern suburbs tend to be the most expensive. They also, in general, have some very good schools. If you are looking for diversity in the north suburbs, Evanston will be a good choice. However, property taxes are very high because of Northwestern. Evanston only has rich or poor neighborhoods.
In Glenview and Northbrook, you will find a large Asian population, good schools, and a lower property tax rate than Evanston. You might want to consider Oak Park or Park Ridge.

The western burbs require you to drive with the sun in your eyes both ways. The towns north of Chicago along the lake are probably out of your price range. The northwest suburbs are the most soul-less, the southwest the most Catholic. The southern suburbs are more gritty and industrial.

Why not try Edison Park or Norwood Park, within the city limits?
