If I take a picture of someone and place it on a website without their knowledge, is it illegal?

In America, yes it's illegal. You cannot use a person's image without their consent.

No, it is not illegal, or else there would never be any pictures of celebrities naked in tabloids, or of anyone under the age of 18 in any newssource.

What is illegal is defamation of character. If you take a picture and photoshop it to look like the person is doing something that may be damaging to their character, or if the picture you publish is taken in a manner that it defames that person, then you could be legally liable.

But if it is a picture that you took of a building on vacation, and there are people in it as well, or if it is a picture that the subject knew was being taken, but had not explicitly consented to the publishing then you are not liable for damages.

well, i beleive it is but if you mean someones avatar,or pic in here it isnt illegal but it isnt nice to do w/ out consent from the person,but i take other ppls picks if i like them,but not to place on a website ,i wouldnt care but some ppl do

The only person who needs to give permission for this is the copyright holder of the photo - usually the person who took it. No permission from the parent is needed for the non-commercial display of a minors photo. Richard

Yes. If they find out about it and are not happy about it they could sue you for invasion of privacy.
