"Gender" is the social role that you were raised with, or are being raised with now. "Sex" is the biological condition of your body; you are male, female, or (in rare cases) possessing some, most, or none of the two distinct sets of sexual characteristics.

Gender is a consequence of biology, but the biology in question is much, much more than just the X and/or Y chromosomes. How you respond to being a male or a female (or other) is up to other chromosomes, your encounters with your family and other people, and your society as a whole.

It's the old nature/nurture argument. There will always be people arguing for environmental factors exclusively, but people who believe in inherited traits will usually accept a combination of both.
