You can remove the rust with a 50/50 mix of molasses and water, it may be a little messy but just paint it on and wait for the rust to lift, then give it a good wash. I think if you want to protect it your going to have to treat the rod with an anti rust preparation.

I'm not too keen on shower rods, but you probably want to look for something stainless steel. If it's too enxpensive or you can't find any, then you can always just paint the rod. Regular paint will keep thinks from rusting (that's why cars aren't bare metal).
Good luck.

You can buy a plastic sleeve that fits over the shower rod.
It's made just for that. I think I got some from Home Depot.
Couple of dollars each. They were white. I am not sure but I think I saw them in silver also.

Rust is caused by moisture. Wipe it off with a dry towel after the steam in the bathroom has dissipated. If it is metal you could also try spraying a bit of wd-40 on a cloth and periodically wiping it off.

Clean the rod with iron out, then wipe it with a little cooking oil. Do at least once a month.
