Yes they are supposed to be "doctor interns"

Real life and fiction don't have to match... See Harry Potter.

Yes, most of the characters in the cast are supposed to be interns. Why the age? Typical Hollywood standards. Adam Brody is, I think, 26 years old? And he plays the 18 year old Seth Cohen in Fox's "The OC".

They are supposed to be surgical interns as in specialists. They are supposed to be around 28. That allows for college, med school, specialty school, and standard internship. They are now surgical interns having to start all over again and learn their specialty. If you notice they are being groomed individually to fill in a need. Addison is trying to turn Alex into a pediatric surgeon. Derek is tying to turn Meredith into a Neurosurgeon. Burke is trying to turn George into a Cardiac surgeon. Bailey is trying to turn Christina into a general surgeon. And Mark will no doubt try and turn Izzy into a plastic surgeon. This is all assuming that they can make it to residency and get the honor of picking a specialty.

They are surgical interns. And they don't always pick people who are exactly that same age for television. (ie: The O.C.) They would rather get good quality actors and and worry about making them look the part later. And the actors on Grey's don't look old at all

Shouldn't they be 26 and up? 4 or 5 years of undergrad then medical school? I don't find their age that off. They are interns!

I'd imagine new actors easier to work with because they are not acquainted with the industry in most cases and just want a job.

And it's not a big deal as long as they look the age of their characters, which I think (along with many others) that they do)

If you start to college at 18, 4 years college, 4 years med school, then residency. If you then specialize in something, it's extra training. They do 4 years of residency.. 18+8+26...that's considering they start college and med school on time.

Some people decide to pursue a medical career after they get out of college and then they have many years of medical school, so this is a possible scenario.

That would be about the right age to be interns. They are learning specialties. They are already doctors.
