Viking ships were a huge jump in technology at the time. Their clinker hull design.(overlaping wood) allowed air to move along the wood seams and effectivly let the boat plane easily by breaking the surface tension of the water. Also their sails were made of special wool the was really efficent. This combined with the fact that they were very shallow draft vessels allowed them to be beached anywhere and made them the ideal craft for moving up rivers etc. This made them fast, manuverable, all purpose attack vessels. Of course they also used them for trade and exploration. The Vikings raided all over the Atlantic and even sent boats down the major European rivers as far as Constantinople and the mediterainean. They explored the atlantic and had bases in Iceland and in the Americas. In effect they were using advanced technology when everyone else was using "the same old thing" Their weapons and clothing were advances aswell. In current tests their clothing was better than modern day fabric for repelling water and retaining heat.
Smart people.

Before modern roads existed, ships were important to everybody. Including the Vikings. The difference was that the Vikings had better ships, and used them als a kind of hit and run weapon.

The unique style of the Viking ships let the Vikings travel across the Northern Atlantic Ocean to Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, and the north american continent (though it wasn't called that at the time) .... prior to their innovation in sailing vessels, no one had been able to travel so far by sea.
