I have 2 goldfish and 1 shubunkin in a 10 gallon tank. They are the only survivors. The ghost shrimp got eaten. The Plecostomus has been the latest victim. The lady at the pet store said the Plecostomus would do well with the goldfish and shubunkin. I guess she was wrong.

A shubunkin is also a goldfish and all goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each. Since you had 3 goldfish, a pleco (probably a common which need to be in a 55 gallon) and ghost shrimp in a tiny 10 gallon it caused loads of problems. All the ammonia all those things give off could of killed every one of them. The ghost shrimp could of died from the ammonia then eaten or just eaten since they shouldn't be in a tank with goldfish, they are too small. Plecos also shouldn't be in a tank with goldfish but not because the goldfish eat them but because the plecos usually eat the goldfish. A lot of algae eaters when they get older become carnivorous and they like the taste of the slime coat. If you want those goldfish to live then get them a larger tank, at least 30 gallons but bigger if you can since that shubunkin can grow to around a foot and the others can grow around 8".

How big are your goldfish? the pleco? All goldfish will eat things small enough. But really, a 10 gallon tank is nowhere near big enough for those types of fish. Goldfish can get 8-10 inches easily in an aquarium, and some plecos can reach 20 inches. I have a 14 inch pleco in my 125 gallon tank.

I never trust what people at the pet store say anymore. "Oh yeah, it's alright to keep the angelfish with the neon tetras." That angelfish had one expensive meal...

Goldfish are dumb and aggressive. They do root around and sift through the gravel at the bottom of tanks for leftover food, and this is probably where they encountered your pleco also scrounging around the bottom of the tank for food. While the pleco does have tough, armor-like scales, constant pecking will stress him out and weaken him...to death. Any fish can NOT stand bullying and pecking.

P.S. Shrimp are very tasty. Shrimp are bottom feeders and dwellers. Goldfish sift through the gravel at the bottom...1+1 = 1 less shrimp.

unless the pleco is dead already. The armor on the pleco is way too tough. It must have died and the goldfish flip him over for the soft belly.

oh, get a bigger tank. A 10 gallon for 2 goldfish and a pleco is way too small.

LOL yes it happens all the time, sometime and I repeat sometimes they do get along, but Goldfish are aggressive and territorial fish. Pleco(catfish) can't take being bothered either. lol
On more than one occasion, I have seen Goldfish even go after and eat cichlids if they are bothered by them. Been in the field for 10 years I have seen about everything.
Folks at the pet stores...Buyer beware , as you should never ever go in and buy fish without first being educated yourself.

no, its not common, the pleco must have died and then they started eating it
on the other hand it is dangerous to keep pleco with goldfish, as soon as they get large enough, the plecos will suck the goldfish's
eyes out and suck big holes in the sides of their bodies
