In Albert Camus's The Stranger, what does Mersault mean when he wants society to greet hi "with cries of hate?

At the end of the book, Mersault reflects that he is actually satisfied with the path he has taken, that is, that he accepts his role as the hated "stranger". I took it to mean that the hatred of the crowd would confirm that he had played the role well.

I also think there's a subtext here; that for Mersault hatred has taken the place of love, and to his mind, serves just as well.
