Breast cancer runs in my family. I am only 20 but this is something I have to think about. I know that at my age breast cancer is 1 out of 225 people. Also if I want to have an early detection I would need to do a self breast check because they dont do mamorgrams at my age. The problem is that I have lumps all over my breasts. You cant see them but you can feel them. How am I suppose to look for lumps when I have them all over? They always hurt really bad before my period. Sometimes I get a dull burning sensation in my left breast too. Is that normal? Please help!!!

I am a physician. I would urge you to visit a doctor, but at your age, I would suspect cysts. During your next self-examine, gently grasp one of the lumps...cysts tend to slip around beneath the skin, but cancers tend to be sticky..think of it this way...a cyst is more like a marble that will move (not far but they can be pushed, and they return to the original position) but cancers are like a ball of sticky glue. This is very inconclusive but a start. Examine the skin (or have another person do it) and look at the surface...cancers tend to form an 'orange skin' appearance. Have you noticed any increase in the size or shape of the lumps? Gently feel beneath the axilla (arm pit) for the lymph nodes. Is there any enlargement, or pain? Some cysts do become malignant (it changes into a cancer) but cysts are usually benign. Given your familial history, I would go to your physician and he may choose to do a biopsy (take one of the cysts) for a pathologist to examine, and treatment or non-treatment would be decided by the results. It is best to find out for certain rather than spend a great deal of time in worrying. I know it is frightening, but people deal well with something that they can understand completely. Remember that there are other possible cause for lumps, and most are either caused by hormonal changes (and vary with your menstrual cycle) or fibromas (fiberous lumps) that cause develop from minor injuries...some women develop some from playing tennis without a suitable bra to provide support.

If you self-examine your breasts regularly, you'll soon learn which lumps are there so that you can detect the appearance of any new ones. We all have lumps in our breasts that are actually glands and nodes of different types, so just the fact that you have them is no cause for concern at all - only if any new ones show up.

If you're really concerned about the ones you have now, ask a GP or a gynecologist to feel them - they're trained to feel a difference and to the way tumors feel (they feel and behave differently from mammary glands and lymph nodes).

Pain and swelling around the time of your period is completely normal, as is that burning sensation that you mention. Don't worry - everything sounds fine to me!

First, you should go to a doctor and get her/his opinion to make sure you're okay. Demand a mamogram if you have an intuition about this.

Second, you probably don't have to worry. The lumps you're feeling are most likely your lymph nodes. They're completely normal. When you're having PMS it's normal for them to swell a little and have tenderness. The best thing you can do is a monthly breast check--memorize the lumps that you do have in your breasts and monitor them for any changes from month to month. Changes are what you should be looking for, not lumps.

In my last visit to the doc he told me I had lumps in my breasts but that these were normal. Apparently they're very common and can be painful when you get your period (which they are in my case). The pain varies from woman to woman. My doc told me the only thing to do about it was avoid eating mushrooms, chocolate and coffee...Something which I don't do because those are the three things I love the most!!If I remember well the fact that I'm on the pill helps with the pain too (I could be wrong, don't quote me on that).
Either way you should go to a doctor and get a professional opinion!

It is not impossible for you to get breast cancer , cancer does not have an age . With your family history it's best to be checked, I'm sure you are just fine, what you'll probably find out is that you have fibristic tissue. They feel like lumps , but are harmless. Just to be safe see your Dr. Stay calm . It is PERFECTLY normal to have sore breasts right before and or during your period. GL .

Some sore lumps in your breast before your period is normal, and yes, boobs are sore before our periods. My friend went through the same thing you are going through right now. She has cystic breasts and breast cancer runs in her family. The best information she got about what's normal and what's not came from a breast cancer clinic. They taught her all the signs to look for, so she really knows what she needs to worry about and what she doesn't need to worry about. Please do the same, it'll save you from worrying all the time.

if cancer run's in your family you can have a mammogram starting at 18 and younger if you are having pain or suspicion in either breast I'm 35 and I've been getting mammo's since 18 because of the risk in my family if your Dr. refuses to order you one then go see a different Dr.and keep doing so until you find one that will but i really don't see why a Dr. would deny this test for you
