They never offer any type of independant scientific proof of their claims. They prey on desperate people who have lost hope.

Advertising is what it is, HIPE, some claims are valid and some are not. Just look at the array of "medicines" that have been removed from the market for adverse effects. All drugs are tested before they are marketed and must be OK'ed by the FDA but there are a lot of open cracks in the system. Many people feel that new products are rushed to market too quickly. Yes, advertising works (ever hear of Ford Motors or Sony). But be wary, the best ads don't always represent the best products.
