DVD. I'll be surprised if anyone answers "VCR" for any reason other than sentimentality.

Both- I like the ones that have half VCR and half DVD so that you can watch all your old movies but can also watch new ones.

If you mean in terms of recording stuff, videos are easier to record and use, and are cheaper. DVD's are more expensive, not as simple, but are better quality and can store more per disc. You have to decide if you want convenience or quality.
P.S. They are about to introduce, or in some places have already introduced two new formats, Blu Ray and HD DVD, one of which will, eventually, replace DVD (alot like the VHS and BETA format war of the 1980's).

When i travel and would like to have music as a backgound, i use my VCR . Then i transfer it to a DVD.
