A Level 2 ultrasound is also called a targeted ultrasound. It's usually done outside of your regular doctor's office by a specially trained ultrasound technician or a perinatologist.

The Level 2 ultrasounds that I've received for my current pregnancy have been ordered to check for genetic abnormalities and fetal growth. They usually take a bit longer, as long as an hour or more in some cases, and beware, you WILL get a separate bill!

Good luck!

A level I ultrasound is solely to confirm pregnancy and measure the fetus for "size and dates". The measurements include a head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. These are averaged to give a mean gestational age that is compared to the mothers dates by the first day of her last menstrual period. A level II ultrasound includes size and dates and anatomy. The fetus is checked for defect "markers" that would indicate genetic abnormalities. If none are found the ultra sound report will state that all anatomy looks normal. If any of the anatomy looks suspicious for anatomy the radiologist will recommend a level III ultrasound with a perinatologist (high risk pregnancy Dr.) The placement and health of the placenta is also checked and the amniotic fluid index is also evaluated. Level II ultrasounds are typically done at 20 weeks gestation. Hope this helps and congratulations!

During a level 2 ultrasound the technician performs a more exhaustive examination of the fetus's anatomy and measurements.

You and your wife should ask your doctor why a second ultrasound has been ordered. It could be simply because the first ultrasound wasn't able to visualize everything the ob wanted to see, or it could be that a potential problem was spotted and the doctor wants to investigate it further.
