Black people who are lazy, welfare riding democrats embarrass me. And it was Rupublicans who freed the slaves!

because Democrats have convinced them that they are victims and need help. It is just another way of in slaving a race. It amazes me that the black community does not see that. Wake UP.

The republicans that freed the slaves were conservationists and also helped the working man...all in all the basic core values of a democrat, with a little wiggle room. They were referred to as the "radical republicans" The Civil War era saw the dissolution of the Whig Party, which was the conservative party at the time. This saw the rise of the Democratic Party.
"The Republican Party was established in 1854 by a coalition of former Whigs, Northern Democrats, and Free-Soilers who opposed the expansion of slavery and held a vision for modernizing the United States."
John C. Frémont ran as the first Republican nominee for President, using the slogan: "Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men, Frémont."
Not your average republican platforms, eh?
The Republicans did not become the "conservative party" until around the 1900's with Taft at the helm, though he broke up many "trusts" That's about when the parties did a "flip-flop" on the issues if you will. The Republicans started focusing on fiscal issues, recruiting the wealthy, upper middle class, and big business as their backers; Democrats then pulled the middle and lower classes as their demographic. I am a liberal and I oppose limitless welfare for the sound of mind and body. It was meant as a resource for the "down and out" and that is what it should be used for. I am not black, but I don't think I will ever admit to being a Republican. I like my fellow man too much.

Dems have spent much effort over the past two or three decades deviding the classes of people in the country. Black white, rich poor etc.. They have gained much political clout by convincing people that they can only be helped by their party. This translates into votes. An example is how the dems would have us believe that the republicans are the party of the rich. What about the Clintons, Al Gore, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy. These are some of the wealthiest people in politics yet they rant about the Bush dynasty and big business riches. The minorities in this country, and sadly, the ignorant majority have fallen prey to political stereotyping from the left.

Democrats love to say they are helping the minorities by giving them special programs that deflate the accomplishments of above said minorities, such as the Affirmitive Action program, which helps to make minority degrees look like they were given to them, instead of being earned. The Reps have helped minorities by promoting equality and giving those who have earned their wealth the wealth they have deserved. And yes, Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Thank you so much for pointing this out to the masses of people who will disagree with you and bash you for saying it. No matter, you cant change their minds, no matter how much logic you use. And that question and answer you linked us to proves how stupid some people are. Thanks again!

I hate these racially based questions, because the truth is, no one really knows what happens inside the voting booth, except the voter...

Do we assume that all brown-haired brown-eyed men vote for one party or the other?

I will venture out on a limb and suggest that black people who vote Republican have probably seen the "help" people get from the Democrats...

Careful.... they'll be calling you the same names that they use for Condileeeeza and Colin Powell.....

Yes, it was the GOP that was organized to fight slavery. Yes, it was the GOP that gave rather generous rights (for their day) to blacks during Reconstruction. Yes, it was the GOP members of Congress who overcame the Dems in Congress for LBJ's civil rights legislation.

I've found racists people in both parties. Neither side is blameless here.

And, to be fair, conservatives see the same social problems as liberals, but they simply see a much different solution.

Republicans (Whigs) were not the same in Lincoln's time and Democrats (as they are now) did not exist. Both sides were opposed to slavery. It was the South that wanted to keep it and the North that didn't.

the 1800's republicans where actually liberal back then, i think it wasn't until the civil rights movement began when the parties made the old switcheroo and the republicans became conservative and the democrats became liberal.

Because the self appointed "leaders" have a vested interest in convincing them otherwise.
