It carried nearly 200,000 lbs of liquid oxygen and about 40,000 lbs of liquid hydrogen, a non-trivial amount of fuel and hardly a "free" ride. This is why the Saturn V was so big, it needed to get more than 300,000 lbs of payload into Earth orbit. The return trip was is where the command module could basically fall into the Earth. It carried only about 122 kg of fuel.

A great deal more than required just to get into orbit.
The only rocket ever capable of getting men to the moon was the giant Saturn V. When apollo was cancelled the giant rocket was mothballed.
That also answers all the questions about why we have not been back to the moon.

It depends on the type of vehicle you propose to use
to escape rom the gravty of the earth .Once you are
out of the field of gravity , you need no fuel except for correction of the direction of your journey in pace and and on return to earth.

the first guy who answered is mostly right! the rockets get you into space and inertia keeps you going once in space.. no fuel needed except for course corrections.. once you get about halfway to the moon the moons gravity does the rest!

welllll a lot to launch off of the earth, but once the space ship is in space it dosent use any fuel. it uses the natural pulls of gravity to get places. so its free i guessss
