ok im a welder . dont drop motor oil on it it will only make a good fire . now mix some oil into some dirt. this will make it cool slower use a torch get it good and hot . make shure all the scale comes off you will see it looks like little red dots peeeling off . use the oil and dirt clay works best mix it with some sand and the oil even old car oil will work put dirt on the groung heat up the metal till its red . use a circuler motion then drop it on the dirt then use the rest of the dirt to cover the top . there wont be no grind marks and it will be dull and protected if ya wanna call me i can tell you better 7572243160 im in virginia i was a hull tech in the navy and a molder

I'm not sure what you're asking.

It all ready has grinder marks on it and you're trying to get rid of them by darkening the metal?

If so, the make a chemical used in gunsmithing called "blueing" that would darken the metal. I don't know however how costly it is.

I would be concerned with heating the metal too much as it will loose it's temper. (strength)

Pooring oil on hot steel is going to make a lot of smoke, and possibly catch fire if the oil reaches it's flash point. (around 420 degrees)

I know that cast iron pans are seasoned with vegitable oil at 350 degrees for one our in an oven. you might want to try that first.

What ever you decide, good luck..
