Can I ad an internal backup drive and later put it in an enclosure and use it on other computers without loosing all the data on it? I have read that most of the ready made external drives have pretty lame software on them.

Go to www.pcworld.com and check their reviews on external drives. And no, I would not suggest you doing what you think to do to an internal drive.

Any drive will do for backup adn photo storage.

It is true that you can buy an internal hard drive and put it in a enclosure (can be bought with shipping online for under $20 easily).

I like to use SyncBack for backups. It can be found at http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html.

A guide to using it can be found at http://www.lifehacker.com/software/geek-to-live/geek-to-live-automatically-back-up-your-hard-drive-147855.php

It can be used with ANY brand of drive.

I always get the cheapest drives I can find at a store. I have gotten a 200GB Western Digital drive for $30 and a 100GB WD Drive for $20 on sale.

The 100GB is in my compouter, while the 200GB rests beside my computer in an enclosure.

You will not loose any data moving it to an enclosure, and it is very easy to do.

Good luck!

i don't know that you can do it that way, unless it's a lptop of course. however if it's speed that worries you, there are one touch backup drives (maxtor comes to mind), and the other option is to make sure you have an external sata port and then use an external sata port (gives you internal hdd type speeds.
