In the beginning, Meredith, Christina, Izzie, George, and Alex are told by the chief that they have little or no chance of becoming surgeons. They are assigned to residents. The first four get Bailey, the Nazi, who tells them when she moves they move and not to disturb her unless someone is dying and they better not be dead when she gets there. By show two Alex is given to her as well because he needs her loving care.

Meredith is the daughter of noticed surgeon Ellis Grey who did her residency at this Seattle teaching hospital. This is where Ellis and Richard, the chief, fell in love and had an affair while they were still residents. Now, Ellis has Alzheimers and only Meredith knows this. Meredith is living in Ellis's old home but needs roomates to make ends meet.

Izzy and George volunteer to be those roommates and quickly become Meredith's new family.

Meanwhile, prior to the show beginning, Meredith met a man at Joe's Bar and took him home and had freaky sex with him. The show opens up with them having to scurry of and later she find out that he is an attending doctor, Derek Shepherd. He is a neuro-surgeon out of New York brought in to compete for the Chief's job should he retire.

Later, while Meredith is sitting there with a severed penis in an ice cooler, Christina nicknames Derek, Doctor McDreamy. The MC apparently is an anagram in latin that means doctor of surgery. Christina confesses that she gets mean when she gets tired.

Another character with a nickname is George who was given the honor of being the first intern to assist in a surgery, an apendectomy, and he almost kills the patient when the stump thread break and Burke, the cardiovascular attending has to take over the procedure. George is given the nickname "007", licensed to kill. Burke will turn out to become Christina's boyfriend and get her pregnant before they are even ready to put a name on their relationship.

The next nick name goes to Izzy, "Dr. Bethany Whispers", a name Alex gives her when he digs up old photos of her as a lingerie model. That is how she paid for medical school. She was raised in a trailer park as a child, became pregnant at 16, has a twelve year old daughter Sarah who she put up for adoption and bakes when she is bored or upset.

That brings us to Alex, the conceited fifth wheel who pictures himself a lady's man, wants to someday be a plastic surgeon, is sleeping his way through the hospital and eventually sleeps with Izzy when there is a bomb threat in the building and she tells him to put up or shut up. The relationship does not last long however, a new patient, Denny Duquette, comes in for a heart transplant and Izzy winds up falling in love with him. Later she winds up killing Denny by trying to get him a heart, but Denny clots out and dies. He does however leave her $8.7 million dollars.

As for Alex, he has hit on every girl on the show with the exception of Bailey and Addison, Dr. Addison Montgomery Shephard, Derek's cliffhanger wife who is only learned about at the end of season one. Alex even started his own syphillis epedemic in the hospital when one nurse he slept with slept with George. It appears from what the chief said Alex had to be bedding several of the nurses. In sort of a Karmic payback Alex would become Addison's pet project. It looked like that would be Izzy but Izzy was preoccupied with Denny in cardiology. Addison is in Pediatric Surgery and was seduced by the chief to join the staff.

Addison enters the series at the end of season one and it is revealed that she cheated on Derek with his best friend Mark, a plastic surgeon from New York and that is why Derek walked out on her and moved to Seattle. Eventually Mark followed her and Derek hit im for talking to Meredith. The interns named him "Mc Steamy". He is like Alex only worse. He comes in and immediately upsets Derek, Addison , and eventually Bailey with his attitude.

Bailey is the one person who seems to be immune to the torrid love affairs in the hospital. That is because she is happily married and that lead to her having a baby boy during the bomb incident. Her husband was unable to be there for the birth as he had a car accident and Derek had to operate on him. George and Addison delivered the baby and so the baby's name is George Bailey Thomas, (It's a wonderful life). this of course, softened her reputation as the nazi and allowed the interns to get into all sorts of trouble.

Christina and Izzie did an unauthorized autopsy after a procedure they were not qualified to perform went a rye. Izzie cut the LVAT wires to Denny's heart to qualify im for his heart translpant. George backdoored an organ harvest to get it to happen. And Meredith and Christina are sleeping with their attendings. And oh, yes one of her patients got up out of his bed at the end of season two after she yelled at him and he wound up being shot in the hospital lobby along with Burke.

Burke, who saw Christina through her failed pregnancy which he only learned about when she passed out in the OR next to him, found himself shot before Denny's surgery. Another surgeon did the operation. After a vilopian tube burst, Christina had a miscarriage and that brought their relationship out into the open and Burke told Richard to be honest. This was after he had subbed in for Richard when Richard needed an operation. Derek was passed over because everyone knew about Meredith. And when Preston, Burke) gets shot Christina is ready to stand by him as well.

Like I said, Richard, the chief, had to have surgery. Derek did it. Richard recovered. Burke is still having trouble with his recovery. But in Richard's recovery he discovers that Meredith is sleeping with Derek. This was pre Addison. Also pre Addison, Ellis, Meredith's mother, comes into the hospital needing surgery and it is learned that she used to sleep with Richard while she was married to her then husband Trevar, who george favors, and he was married to his wife, who currently wants to a divorce. His wife may be partially resposible for Denny's death as she forced her husband to throw a prom at which all of his doctors were present leaving only nurses to watch Denny.

At any rate, Richard is visiting Ellis now. Derek is trying to treat Ellis's Alzheimers. And Ellis's ex husband has a new family which means Meredith has a half sister she has not formally met.

Meredith is not short of suitor, herself. After leaving McDreamy, she buys a dag that becomes a terror and is give to Mc Dreamy and is treated by Mc Vet. McVet, Finn, becomes Meredith's lover and Derek's competition. Earlier, in a drunken pick up , Meredith sleeps with one guy who has to be treated by Derek for the inability to lose his erection after sleeping with Meredith. She also gets sad and drunk and sleeps with George who wants her but the next morning she doesn't want him.

This is where Callie, the ER/orthopedic surgeon comes in and falls for George. Unfortunately, the experience with Meredith has made it impossible for George to tell her he loves her, so she has moved on to McSteamy, who of course moved immediately on to Addison after her divorce.

Izzie is coming back to work.

Burke is having to hide his tremors after his surgery.

Richard is about to have a divorce.

Derek is afraid of hurting Meredith who dumpt McVet but in her apendectomy got Addison to tell Derek not to hurt Meredith anymore.

Callie dumped George.

And a new doctor is coming onto the scene McHotty.

That should be enough to catch you up to speed.

If you go to www.abc.com and click on the Episode Guide, it will take you to another page where you can select the Season (1, 2, or 3) and then select the Episode. It gives you a pretty good summary, which is short and to the point. The newer episode summaries can be more detailed, but you will have to click on the link labeled "Read More".

There is a website (not Wiki) that has recaps of it all from the beginning - Or at least there used to be. I found it be googling Grey's stuff. But I can't remember what it was. Wish I could help you with the name of the site, but I'm sure you can find it if you look.

I was in the same boat, watched a few shows here and there, and only now am getting really into it. So I bought Seasons 1 and 2 off of eBay...trust me, its better than reading a synopsis of every show so far. And more fun.
