I had scoliosis surgery in 1999 when I had just turned 16. I had a curvature of over 60 degrees when I had the surgery, and it had increased nearly 40 degrees in the prior year and a half or so. They straightened out my spine, fused it using grinded up a few ribs they took out, and attached two rods to the spine to prevent it from curving again. I'd be more than happy to help you out and try to ease your mind because I can understand that it's an ordeal. My email is Magicice6@yahoo.com

my mother has had three surgeries for scoliosis. the first was about 25 years ago when they put in a harrington rod (which i believe is now an outdated procedure). approx 15 years ago they removed it, as the clamps were causing nerve pain and the rod had done it's job in fusing her spine. just 5 years ago she had new rods put in in the hopes of giving her back her nautural curve. (since the initial surgery fused her entire spine from t3-l4, it was a lot of weight and eventually her spine caused her to pitch forward.) the last surgery was successful, but she had to be further fused to the sacrum. this means she can no longer bend at the waist.

her case is extreme, but i know she had the best dr in Oheneba Boachi-Adjei, M.D at the hospital for special surgery in new york. let me know if you'd like more details or to correspond directly.

I personally havent had one, but my friend has, and she has told me about it. In her case, the scoliosis was caught very late because instead of her back bending outward into an "S", with the appearance of a "hunchback", her bend was to the side, and not so noticable. She has a very long scar down her back where they used a rod and fused her vertibae together. She actually likes that her back is fused, since it gives her extremely good posture.

Well now a days this type of Surgery isn't has bad as it was when I first had my back surgery..Tech is so much better and recovery time hopefully won't be as near as long as mine was!!! Good Luck! And eh it leaves the scar that people have been stating here on your answers, but sometimes theres stuff that happen in our lifes that we don't have control over... Don't stress about it to much you'll drive yourself crazy over it......
