Try here: http://www.cruisersplus.com/ and if you don't see your part in there you can call them and they will help you find one. Their business hours are: Monday-Friday: 9:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M. CST and the phone number is: 615-286-2143. I wouldn't try anything that don't match the original because it could damage the part or something else in your electrical system.

It's possible that another type box might work,,but Not Likely.

Each box has specific values and calibrations.

A guy on Ebay has an earlier model one,,'79~80

I'd suggest calling a reputable dealer and asking them what will retrofit amongst the year models.

Yamaha "generally" is not too bad about making major changes,,
"USUALLY",,if a part Looks similar,,it'll interchange.
But thats No Gaurantee

You might also contact the sellers on Ebay which have several parts for YOUR year,,and ask if they have the box you need.

Also ask if THEY Know what'll interchange,,,often times OWNERS will have gone down same road You're on now.
They may know Specifically from experience,,or Know of a Parts or Info Source.

Wish I could be of more help,,Good Luck

*Another thing,,about Splicing Wires.
Color Codes Do NOT necessarily cross-ove from brand to brand.

BLACK and RED are usually Ground & +12v,,,,everything else,,who knows??

Even on Same Brand bike,,colors can vary...it's TRICKY.

Most Jap bikes of that era Do NOT make available the "PIN-OUT" on the boxes.

To even TRY to splice in a different unit,,You'd have to know the actual Function of each indiviual wire,,,on both boxes.
You Cross match according to FUNCTION,,not necessarily "color code"

NOT Saying it's Impossible,,,,just that the Odds are probably slim,,,and it's a demanding mod requiring Specifics.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Amy,,
Here's an aftermarket one on Ebay for your specific bike.
$150 seems pricey,,but "black boxes" have Always been expensive.

If $$$ is an issue,,keep trying to find a Used Replacement.
Ebay is a good source,,and any other Motorcycle Salvage places you can find.

But at least look at the aftermarket one,,and Copy the contact details for future refference---it's a "Company" rather than "just a guy with ONE",,so they'll probably still have them available 6 months from now.

Ebay Listings are deleted a few weeks after they expire.
So be sure you "Hard Copy" the place's contact info.

And if worse comes to worst & you cant find a "cheapie",,
at least You'll have that source.

I looked at Yamaha's part numbers.
'80's and '82's appear to be different.
The Part Numbering system Changed on some items.
So I checked the Ignition Coils that run off the box,,for a clue.
The Coils follow same "old" Part# System,,,but show to be Different Numbers between the year models.
That "clue" suggests the BOXES are probably NOT interchangeble with older than '82 parts

Also,,search around the net for "Yamaha XS1100/XJ1100 Owners Club",,Association,,etc, etc, etc

Here's one,,,
http://www.xs11.com/

It's not as comprehensive as some clubs,,but it Does have some info that might help.
They DO have some TECH ARTICLES,,about Ignition Probs.
READ those,,It's possible that your box may not be bad???
Another "clue" is that there's no mention about problems w/ the BOXES.
That's no gaurantee,,but usually if a particular bike has a "weak spot",,You Will see prominent & frequent mention about it.
"No news is Good news",,so to speak,,Usually

Look for Clubs,,search thru their pages,,and even contact them with your questions.
Many times they'll have useful info or leads to parts/info.

Don't use a different igniter from a different manufacturer. The color codes are completely different and resistance of resistors are different between make and models. The only hope you'll have changing igniters is of the same model bike but different years. Try searching motorcycle salvage yards. Do a web search for "motorcycle salvage" Good luck.

If ya do a web search you can generally find an organization devoted to the type of bike you have. Owning a VTX I joined VTXOA on line and the help and info available is just mindblowing.

You may find one on ebay. You can also check with local Yamaha mechanics who have resources for used motor cycle parts.

Yes you should be able to splice the wires,a motorcycle auto electrician will be able to do the job for you without any trouble and it shouldn't cost much money.

You should try looking in a salvage for the part. Or maybe an ad in your local newspaper.
